Life Science Partner Executive Search is pleased to announce the recruitment of Peter Schiller, PhD to Canary Medical, where he will serve as Vice President of Research and Development.

Canary Medical is an innovative medical technology company commercializing smart implants in the orthopedic, cardiovascular, and aesthetic markets.

The company integrates a sensor and microprocessor system into FDA-cleared implantable medical devices to generate real-time insights about the performance and safety of these products.

Peter Schiller, PhD

In his new role, Schiller will spearhead continued product development and commercialization, provide scientific and strategic leadership for this growing team, and serve as the face of the research and development organization to internal and external audiences.

An engineer with a PhD focused on smart sensor systems, Schiller has spent 20 years developing and commercializing novel medical technologies, including a MEMS sensor company he founded and led as CEO.

Schiller previously served as Director of Device Development at San Diego-based Progenity, where he led the design and development of a combination device and connected drug delivery system for gastrointestinal health.

Life Science Partner is pleased to announce the recruitment of Fred Siebert to Beckman Coulter as Director, Global Clinical Affairs. Beckman Coulter is an innovative diagnostics and life science company that creates the world’s most efficient diagnostic laboratories. It is part of the Danaher group of families.

In this new role, Siebert will be responsible for the development and execution of a consolidated global clinical trials strategy for the company. This work is of particular importance to the company in the context of changing European regulatory requirements and continued growth of the company’s clinical activities in Asia.

Siebert brings deep experience in global clinical trials for molecular diagnostics and biopharmaceuticals, most recently at OvaScience, where he oversaw their clinical programs as Vice President of Clinical Operations.

Earlier in his career, Siebert held a variety of clinical affairs leadership roles at Abbott Molecular, where he led the company’s first companion diagnostics partnership and earned the Abbot Chairman’s Award for his contributions.

Utilizing this platform, the company provides customized companion diagnostics solutions for pharmaceutical companies developing novel oncology drugs. Leica Biosystems is part of the Danaher group of companies.

Schrock previously served as Sr. Manager, Alliances with Illumina in San Diego, where he was responsible for managing corporate partnerships for the development of companion diagnostics for oncology drugs. Prior, Schrock led clinical affairs programs in IVD and CDx with Ventana Medical Systems, Abbott Laboratories, and Cepheid.

In his new role, Schrock will be responsible for overseeing Leica’s clinical research programs, providing strategic leadership to the company’s evolving clinical affairs function, and managing partnerships with pharmaceutical companies for the continued development and testing of companion diagnostics for personalized medicine.

“Companion diagnostics development is core to the Leica’s clinical strategy, so this leader must have a solid grounding in not only clinical trials leadership, but also diagnostics development and pharmaceutical partnering. Schrock is a chemist by training and earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Chemistry from Illinois State University.

Based in Leesburg, Virginia, K2M is a medical device company focused on creating tools and implants for minimally-invasive spine surgery. The company is a leader in the 3D printing of spinal implants for deformity (especially scoliosis), trauma, and tumor operations. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Global Quality and Regulatory Affairs, Seidl will be responsible for directing global clinical outcomes research programs and the global regulatory process for K2M’s product portfolio.

Previously, Seidl served as Manager, Clinical Affairs for the Critical Care division of Edwards Lifesciences, a leader in artificial heart valves and related technologies. Seidl has also held clinical affairs leadership positions with Exactech (orthopedic devices), Axogen (biologics), and Cardioquest (cardiovascular research). She brings to K2M more than a decade of clinical and regulatory affairs leadership including trials in spinal orthopedics.

Former Chief Scientific and Medical Officer Advanced Wound Care, Smith & Nephew

Life Science Partner recruited Bert Slade, MD, to serve as the Vice President, Clinical Development for TissueTech.  Slade has built his career in leading clinical trials, medical affairs, and regulatory approvals for medical device and pharmaceutical companies worldwide.  He joins TissueTech while also providing clinical support for Chisholm Clinical Research Services where he has set up his own vehicle to conduct clinical trials using the European platform as an inroad to EU product approvals.

During his tenure at Smith and Nephew, Slade was challenged as the first CMO for the Advanced Wound Management Division to restructure the three-strategic business unit R&D Departments and two clinical groups into a single international R&D organization with the addition of post-marketing surveillance.

“With his extensive experience in FDA submissions of BLAs and NDAs including a clinical background in wound healing and regenerative medicine, Slade will serve as a critical asset for TissueTech’s clinical trial designs and submissions,” states Tom Callaway, President and Founding Partner of Life Science Partner.

Former Global Pharmacovigilance and Clinical Safety Physician Otsuka Pharmaceuticals

Chris Stein, MD, PhD, was recruited by Life Science Partner to serve as Director, Medical Safety Physician for Allergan where he will oversee Pharmacovigilance for Allergan’s CNS drug portfolio.

In his previous role at Otsuka, Stein partnered with safety physicians at Bristol Myers Squibb to co-market the block buster drug, Abilify, and formulate a regulatory compliance strategy and risk management plan while providing signal evaluation and drug safety reporting.

“Intelligent, articulate and passionate about pharmacovigilance, Stein will be able to hit the ground running in his CNS role for Allergan’s pharmacovigilance team,” states Tom Callaway, MD, Founder and President of Life Science Partner. “He brings exceptional analytical and writing skills to be a great addition to the team.”

Chris Stein earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and Computer Science in 1984 from the Southwest Missouri State University. He completed his MD and PhD from the St. Louis University School of Medicine and his MPH from the University of Kentucky College of Public Health.

Former Vice President, Global Clinical Affairs, Zimmer Biomet

Life Science Partner recruited Jing Xie, PhD, MS, former Vice President, Global Clinical Affairs for Zimmer Biomet to become the Medical Device Innovation Consortium’s (MDIC) first Vice President, Clinical Affairs.

MDIC is the first-ever public-private partnership (PPP) created with the sole objective of advancing medical device regulatory science to expedite development, assessment, and review of innovative medical technologies. The overall mission of the MDIC is to support the FDA’s vision to achieve first in the world patient access in the US and to assure the safety and effectiveness of medical devices through the Total Product Life Cycle.

Xie takes on her new role at the MDIC after having oversight of approximatively 300 clinical projects worldwide for Zimmer Biomet. She possesses a highly successful track record in the orthopedic industry for delivering on objectives, while maintaining effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

“With a global understanding around clinical trial management including data integration for regulatory agencies across the US, Europe and Asia, Xie is a well-seasoned leader to execute the clinical affairs initiatives at the MDIC,” states Tom Callaway, MD, Founder and President of Life Science Partner.

Jing Xie earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Analytical Chemistry from Xiamen University in China and completed her PhD in Materials Science from the University of Alabama. She holds an MS in Computer Science from Purdue University and an MS in Chemistry from the University of Alabama.

Former Senior Director, Global Quality Assurance Haemonetics Corporation

Scott Cohn was recruited by Life Science Partner to serve as Surgical Specialties’ Vice President, Global Quality Assurance where he will build a quality systems team and implement the harmonization of Surgical Specialties’ quality operations across its manufacturing facilities worldwide.

Cohn joins Surgical Specialties after serving as Senior Director, Global Quality Assurance for Haemonetics Corporation where he led the company’s initiative to improve and drive quality standards to the next level from their global contract manufacturers and suppliers.

As a hands-on leader, Cohn played a key role during Haemonetics acquisition of Pall Medical as he led the stabilization and integration activities to synchronize quality systems and operations for maximum efficiency and quality measures.

“As a results-driven quality management expert with a track record for bringing underperforming plants up to international standards, Cohn will be an essential change-agent leader for Surgical Specialties’ manufacturing operations,” states Tom Callaway, MD, Founder and President of Life Science Partner.

Former Vice President, Clinical Affairs at Elixir Medical

Life Science Partner has recruited Judi Jaeger to become Director, Global Clinical Affairs at Beckman Coulter reporting to Kim Oleson, Vice President of Clinical Affairs for Danaher’s Life Sciences and Diagnostics Platform.

“With first-hand leadership experience in the clinical development of two world-leading Class III devices and the ability to build and lead global teams, Jaeger’s scientific background in complex technologies and the regulatory intricacies will set her up to thrive and deliver at Beckman Coulter,” states Tom Callaway, MD, President and Founder of Life Science Partner.

During her clinical career, Jaeger was a critical part of Medtronic’s clinical team’s success in getting the Resolute product approved globally as well serving as key role for the worldwide approval of Johnson & Johnson/Cordis’ Cypher coated stent.

Jaeger earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree as a Psychology Major from Rutgers University in 1986.

Former Healthcare Compliance Policy Director at Amgen

Life Science Partner partnered with Beckman Coulter to recruit Conner Childers, JD, to serve as Vice President, Head of Global Compliance for Beckman Coulter.  He will report to Curt Brueske, JD, General Counsel.

In his most recent role at Amgen, Childers had direct responsibility for building the compliance program so that the company was prepared to respond to the company’s first Corporate Integrity Agreement.  Working across Amgen’s U.S. operations, Childers recruited and led a team that made compliance part of the corporate commercial objectives.

With his Amgen experience in building new compliance programs in partnership with business units, Childers has the right balance of leadership and influence to build an effective Beckman Coulter compliance organization,” states Tom Callaway, MD, Founder and President of Life Science Partner. “His legal and organizational background including a career as a Naval Officer have given him the skills and ability to build and lead world class teams.”

Childers earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Government from Claremont McKenna College and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Arizona, College of Law.
