Former Chief Information Officer, Pinscriptive

Life Science Partner has recruited Roni Amiel to serve as Notal Vision’s Chief Information Officer. Notal Vision is a health technology company offering the first patient-activated, home-based monitoring system to prevent the progression of macular degeneration through early detection and intervention.  In this new role, Amiel will lead the company’s health innovation technologies strategy, development, and implementation.

Amiel is well qualified for this innovative company’s leadership. As Co-Founder and CIO of Pinscriptive, Amiel built the company’s technology platform from the ground up integrating with payers, providers, and pharmaceutical companies.

Previously, Amiel served as the CIO for Blythedale Children’s Hospital where he led the implementation of enterprise information systems and technical services. Earlier in his career Amiel served in IT leadership roles for the City of New York’s Department of Health, Columbia University Medical Center’s Cardiovascular Research Foundation, and PTC Therapeutics. Amiel’s service in the Israeli Navy is an additional asset given Notal Vision’s R&D and production operations in Tel Aviv, as well as its Israeli investor base.

Life Science Partner has recruited Jim Long to serve as Notal Vision’s Chief Financial Officer. Notal Vision is a health technology company offering the first patient-activated, home-based monitoring system to prevent the progression of macular degeneration through early detection and intervention.

As the CFO of Notal Vision, Long will report to Quinton Oswald, CEO, and will be responsible for overseeing all financial matters including fundraising to accelerate the company’s growth trajectory.

His financial leadership of several major company transitions is regarded as a key asset for his new role at Notal Vision.

Life Science Partner has recruited Dave Driscoll to serve as Senior Vice President, Sales for Avizia. Avizia is an innovative telemedicine company providing an end-to-end telehealth platform that integrates care coordination software with industry-leading video devices and mobile apps, enabling clinics and hospitals to deliver quality patient care anywhere. In this new role, Driscoll will lead the expansion of Avizia’s sales program and executing strategies for the company’s continued growth.

As a seasoned sales leader with more than 25 years of experience driving significant top-line growth for multiple companies across the digital healthcare ecosystem, Driscoll is well-equipped to lead Avizia’s sales organization. Driscoll has a solid track record of leading solution-focused sales teams at enterprise software companies such as Visicu, Medsphere Systems, Conifer Health and GE Centricity.

Life Science Partner recruits former Senior Scientist at Elan Pharmaceuticals

 Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Robert Galemmo, PhD, to the Southern Research Institute in Birmingham, Alabama.

Southern Research Institute is an independent, not-for-profit center for scientific research  organization with a focus on the discovery and advancement of new, small-molecule therapeutics from the design stage to the clinic, Southern Research Institute’s Drug Discovery Research Division has accomplished innovative research in the areas of cancer, infectious disease and neuroscience.

At Elan Pharmaceuticals, Galemmo oversaw the leadership of two chemistry efforts in the discovery of highly selective CNS penetrant kinase inhibitors for Parkinson’s disease.  Previously, he served as Senior Director and Head of Chemistry at Neuromed Pharmaceuticals, a Vancouver-based biotechnology company focused on calcium ion channel inhibitors.

“Galemmo is a talented medicinal chemist and experienced manager of diverse scientific teams,” noted Tom Callaway, MD, founder and president of Life Science Partner.  “His broad therapeutic area experience will serve the Institute well, as it builds upon its considerable success in drug discovery.”

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Mark Suto, PhD, an experienced scientist and drug discovery executive, to the Southern Research Institute in Birmingham, Alabama.

Southern Research Institute.  With a focus on the discovery and advancement of new, small-molecule therapeutics from the design stage to the clinic, Southern Research’s Drug Discovery Research Division has accomplished innovative research in the areas of cancer, infectious disease and neuroscience.

Suto was previously Vice President at Icagen, a biopharmaceutical company focused on the novel small molecule drugs that target ion channels in diverse therapeutic areas. He was responsible for leading discovery and development chemistry activities, including medicinal, bioanalytical and computational chemistry for the company.  Previously, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer at Neurion Pharmaceuticals.

“Suto is a passionate and articulate individual, with an impressive background in drug discovery,” noted Tom Callaway, MD, founder and president of Life Science Partner.  “He will bring infectious enthusiasm along with 28 years of large pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience to the team at Southern Research.”

Life Science Partner recruits former Vice President, Globalization Projects and Preclinical Development for GlaxoSmithKline

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Blaine Knight, an experienced scientist and drug discovery executive, to the Southern Research Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. 

Southern Research Institute is an independent, not-for-profit center for scientific research providing innovative leadership in scientific discovery, drug development, engineering, aerospace, materials, environmental and energy research, chemical and biological defense, and homeland security.   

With a focus on the discovery and advancement of new, small-molecule therapeutics from the design stage to the clinic, Southern Research Institute’s Drug Discovery Research Division has accomplished innovative research in the areas of cancer, infectious disease and neuroscience.

Most recently, Knight was the Vice President, Globalization Projects and Preclinical Development for GlaxoSmithKline, where he developed a strategy for establishing R&D facilities in Asia and identified opportunities for outsourcing and innovative science from discovery to proof of concept from the American and European GSK sites in Asia.   Knight has held several executive positions at GSK within the Discovery Research Directorate including VP, Strategic Alliances; VP, Screening Sciences; and VP, Systems Research.  Prior to his roles at GSK, he held leadership positions in the Biochemistry Division at Glaxo Wellcome and in the Division of Molecular Sciences at the Glaxo Research Institute.

Knight received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and earned his Doctorate in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland in College Park.  Blaine completed his National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI.

Life Science Partner recruits Rob Shaw, Former Executive Director of the Georgia Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Rob Shaw, a not-for-profit healthcare focused executive, to the Georgia Arthritis Foundation. 

The Arthritis Foundation is a nationwide nonprofit organization leading efforts to prevent, control and cure arthritis and related diseases with more than 500,000 volunteers, 46 chapters and 150 community service sites.  The Georgia Arthritis Foundation works to improve the quality of life for children and adults with rheumatic diseases and their families.  The Arthritis Foundation works to improve medical care, provide collective and individual advocacy, stimulate research, and provide education and support for a disease that affects people of all ages.

Shaw is an experienced fundraiser and health advocate.  In Shaw’s most recent role at the Georgia Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), he successfully led the organization in raising millions of dollars each year for the JDRF program through a wide variety of community fundraising events and a major gifts program.

A native Floridian, Rob moved to the coast of Georgia in 1992 and then relocated to Atlanta in 1994.  Over the past thirteen years, Rob has been actively working with not-for-profits including: Project Open Hand, AIDS Walk Atlanta and the American Heart Association.

Life Science Partner recruits former Vice President, Finance and CFO of Serologicals Corporation who led company through $1.3 B acquisition

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Harold W. (Bud) Ingalls to CardioMEMS, Inc. as the Chief Financial Officer.  CardioMEMS is an early stage medical device company focused on the application of Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology to create innovative devices for the diagnosis and management of chronic diseases. 

CardioMEMS is developing and commercializing implantable wireless sensors targeted for the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) markets.

In Ingalls’ previous role as CFO of Serologicals, a public life sciences company, he was instrumental in executing on a strategic high-growth, mergers-oriented business plan and negotiating its $1.3 B acquisition by Millipore.  Earlier,  his general management skills were evident as he was President and CEO of Roche  Industries,  a $500 M international commodity and specialty chemicals manufacturer.

Ingalls will join the executive management team with the primary responsibility for the continued private and public financing of the Company’s operations, including the expansion of the technology platform and the launch of additional products.  In addition, he will oversee a small team with responsibility for the analysis and review of the company’s financial data, performance, expenditures and costs.

Ingalls received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin.

Bringing a lifetime of commercial radiology management to internationally renown academic institution

Life Science Partner announced today the recruitment of Swapan Sen to become Executive Director, eRadiology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. 

Sen was previously the President and COO of Raytel Imaging Holdings, a division of SHL-Telemedicine Ltd., which provides radiology services and new facilities that provide for  the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease.

“Sen has the broad financial and operational management of radiology centers, with a strong background in the commercial arena of national operations, “noted Thomas H. Callaway, MD, President and Founder of Life Science Partner.  “He was attracted to joining the Cleveland Clinic because their cutting-edge radiology technologies and international brand recognition gives them a leg-up in the emerging market for teleradiology.”

The eRadiology Department at Cleveland Clinic provides services and equipment to allow geographically dispersed radiologists access to experienced specialists in the development of outpatient imaging centers (including site selection and design, equipment acquisition, employee recruitment and training) and teleradiological access to the academic, subspecialty trained radiologists of the Cleveland Clinic.

At Raytel Imaging, Sen led a company that owns and operates stand-alone, multi-modality diagnostic imaging centers across the country. These centers provide a wide variety of imaging services, which include MRI and MRA, CT, Ultrasound, Mammography, Nuclear Imaging, DEXA Scanning and X-Ray.  Since its acquisition in April 2002 by SHL-Telemedicine, Sen oversaw its expansion into cardiac monitoring (e.g., EKG telemonitoring) and cardiac imaging, including nuclear cardiac business.

Early in his career, Sen was a leader in the introduction of Nuclear Magnetic Imaging (MRI) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  He received his B.S. from Calcutta University, in Calcutta, India and his MS in Healthcare Administration at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.

Life Science Partner places pharma and business development veteran to champion commercialization at Birmingham’s nationally-acclaimed research center.

Life Science Partner announces the placement of William S. “Sandy” White as chief executive officer at the UAB Research Foundation at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). White will guide patenting, commercializing and licensing efforts for products and technologies developed by UAB and Southern Research Institute faculty and staff.

The UAB Research Foundation, established in 1987, identifies, assesses, protects, and markets intellectual property developed at the nationally-renowned UAB medical research center and at Southern Research, an affiliated not-for-profit drug discovery and technology development organization.

“Sandy has extraordinary experience in both the commercialization of technology from the pharmaceutical industry and in regional, high-tech development,” says Life Science Partner Founder and President Thomas H. Callaway. “This unique combination of entrepreneurial talents suits him well for the partnering work and economic outreach he’ll be asked to undertake as a champion of the biosciences community in Alabama.”

An accomplished biotech corporate leader and MBA with degrees in pharmacy and biology, White moves to UAB from his role as president and CEO at the Columbus Technology Council. At this non-profit organization that fosters growth in central Ohio’s high technology sector, White oversaw ongoing operations, an organizational merger, and the development and adoption of overall technology commercialization plan including venture capital, incubators, research parks and basic academic research.

As an independent consultant, White provided business development and management consulting services. He also served the University of Georgia’s first Venture Fellow, assisting and promoting the development of early-stage companies at the University.

White also previously served as president, CEO and director at BioCache Pharmaceuticals, an early-stage biotechnology company focused on development and commercialization, as it sought to grow from an academic setting with a basic research approach into a commercially driven entity.

Until shortly after the Monsanto-Pharmacia merger, White was president and business leader for Integrated Protein Technologies, a unit responsible for creating and developing new pharmaceutical-based businesses within the corporation. White held responsibility over the technical and commercial evaluation of business opportunities in the earliest stages of development for this enterprise held up as exemplary in Monsanto’s efforts to advance global healthcare.

While vice president of commercial development and planning for pharmaceutical R&D at the Storz Ophthalmics division of American Home Products Company, White managed development and marketing research for both pharmaceuticals and devices at this $250 million organization.

White was director of business development at a Boehringer Ingelheim subsidiary, Clinical Research Foundation, a clinical research organization for which he developed the initial business plan. At Adria Laboratories, a pharmaceutical company focused primarily on oncology, he served as manager of new business development and licensing. White began his career as a manager of regulatory affairs and, later, new product planning at A.H. Robins.

White holds a bachelor’s in biology from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s in pharmacy from the Medical College of Virginia. He earned an MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University.
