Life Science Partner is pleased to announce the recruitment of Mark Alvarez to Irrimax, where he will serve as Chief Executive Officer.

Irrimax is an Atlanta-based medical technology company that is redefining wound irrigation with Irrisept, the only FDA-cleared medical device for irrigation containing the proven antiseptic chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG).

Alvarez was most recently Chairman, President & CEO of BC Technical, a healthcare services company focused on diagnostic imaging solutions for hospitals & clinics across the US. BCT was acquired in 2017 by Alpha Source, a portfolio company of Baird Capital. Prior to his BC Technical role, Mark was Chairman-Elect & COO of Microtek Medical (Nasdaq:MTMD), a global manufacturer of custom infection control products acquired by Ecolab.

Prior to starting her own consulting firm in 2017, Ms. Goldberg served as the CEO of the Massachusetts Technology Collaboration, a public economic development engine designed to foster technological advancements, where she helped launch Massachusetts to national leadership for adoption and interoperability of electronic medical records and collaborated to build the health information exchange connection to the EHR.

She will succeed Bill Murray as CEO, whom Life Science Partner recruited at the organization’s inception, and is well-suited to lead MDIC into its next phase of growth and impact, building on the foundational successes of Mr. Murray and his team.

Previously, Ms. Goldberg served as director of The Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at Tufts University, a program she launched to drive innovation for the university. Ms. Goldberg received her BA from Tufts University and her MBA from Stanford University.

Former Chief Information Officer, Pinscriptive

Life Science Partner has recruited Roni Amiel to serve as Notal Vision’s Chief Information Officer. Notal Vision is a health technology company offering the first patient-activated, home-based monitoring system to prevent the progression of macular degeneration through early detection and intervention.  In this new role, Amiel will lead the company’s health innovation technologies strategy, development, and implementation.

Amiel is well qualified for this innovative company’s leadership. As Co-Founder and CIO of Pinscriptive, Amiel built the company’s technology platform from the ground up integrating with payers, providers, and pharmaceutical companies.

Previously, Amiel served as the CIO for Blythedale Children’s Hospital where he led the implementation of enterprise information systems and technical services. Earlier in his career Amiel served in IT leadership roles for the City of New York’s Department of Health, Columbia University Medical Center’s Cardiovascular Research Foundation, and PTC Therapeutics. Amiel’s service in the Israeli Navy is an additional asset given Notal Vision’s R&D and production operations in Tel Aviv, as well as its Israeli investor base.

Former Managing Director for Empresario Partners and Interim CFO for MDLive

Life Science Partner has recruited Jim Long to serve as Notal Vision’s Chief Financial Officer. Notal Vision is a health technology company offering the first patient-activated, home-based monitoring system to prevent the progression of macular degeneration through early detection and intervention.

As the CFO of Notal Vision, Long will report to Quinton Oswald, CEO, and will be responsible for overseeing all financial matters including fundraising to accelerate the company’s growth trajectory.

His financial leadership of several major company transitions is regarded as a key asset for his new role at Notal Vision.

Former Chief Scientific and Medical Officer Advanced Wound Care, Smith & Nephew

Life Science Partner recruited Bert Slade, MD, to serve as the Vice President, Clinical Development for TissueTech.  Slade has built his career in leading clinical trials, medical affairs, and regulatory approvals for medical device and pharmaceutical companies worldwide.  He joins TissueTech while also providing clinical support for Chisholm Clinical Research Services where he has set up his own vehicle to conduct clinical trials using the European platform as an inroad to EU product approvals.

During his tenure at Smith and Nephew, Slade was challenged as the first CMO for the Advanced Wound Management Division to restructure the three-strategic business unit R&D Departments and two clinical groups into a single international R&D organization with the addition of post-marketing surveillance.

“With his extensive experience in FDA submissions of BLAs and NDAs including a clinical background in wound healing and regenerative medicine, Slade will serve as a critical asset for TissueTech’s clinical trial designs and submissions,” states Tom Callaway, President and Founding Partner of Life Science Partner.

Slade earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology from Hamilton College.  He earned his MD from the Upstate Medical Center at the University of New York.

Leading Clinical Development of Novel Compounds for Anemia and Fibrosis

Life Science Partner announced today the recruitment of Russell Ellison, MD, to become Vice President, Clinical and Medical Affairs at FibroGen, a biotechnology-based drug discovery company using its expertise in the fields of tissue fibrosis and Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (HIF) biology to discover, develop and commercialize novel therapeutics for fibrotic disorders, anemia, ischemic disease, cancer and other areas of unmet medical needs.

FibroGen also develops and produces recombinant human collagens and gelatins using unique production technology that provides the basis for FibroGen’s proprietary cosmetic dermal filler and biomaterials supply business.

“Russ was attracted to FibroGen due to its extensive portfolio of compounds marching steadily toward the clinic and their potential to dramatically improve the lives of patients with anemia and other life-threatening diseases,” said Thomas H. Callaway, MD, Founder and President of Life Science Partner. “His combination of FDA regulatory experience and global medical affairs made him a perfect fit for this emerging pharmaceutical company,” he added.

Prior to his recruitment to FibroGen, Ellison was Vice President, Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer of Sanofi-Synthelabo USA, with responsibility for building its best-in-class medical affairs, regulatory and safety teams. He oversaw the clinical development of key products such as Plavix and Ambien, and was renown for reducing project development timelines and improving relations with managed care companies.

Ellison was recruited to Sanofi from Hoffmann La Roche. As Vice President, Medical Affairs and the Chief Medical Officer, he oversaw a 300-member organization that oversaw clinical trials, managed medical strategy, intervened on behalf of the company with regulatory agencies and developed clinical development strategies in sync with the company’s commercial strategies for its compounds in development. He was noted by his peers as a rare physician who understood the business aspects, as well as the clinical implications of the pharmaceutical industry.

A Canadian physician, Ellison has a global understanding of drug development and registration, as well as the challenges of reimbursement and clinical acceptance of new drugs. At FibroGen, his skills will be valuable as he builds the clinical and regulatory teams and moves the products from the pre-clinical to clinical development phase.

Life Science Partner places healthcare industry strategist and investment banker to guide medical device company.

Life Science Partner announces the placement of Shelley Hartman as president and chief executive officer for GMP Companies, Inc. of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In addition to her overall responsibilities for global strategy, finance, and operations, Hartman will direct GMP Companies’ continued expansion and transformation toward a greater emphasis on commercialization of its innovative products. GMP Companies’ pharmaceutical, diagnostic and medical device technologies help treat medical conditions including diabetes, glaucoma, genetic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, immunologic diseases, cancer and neurological disorders.

Before joining GMP Companies, Hartman was vice president and managing director of Goldman Sachs’ medical technology investment banking division, a group she created to serve both emerging and established medical device companies. Also at Goldman Sachs, Hartman held the same title at the healthcare services division. In these roles, she
has helped senior executive teams define strategy at some of the nation’s largest healthcare companies.

Hartman began her career at First Boston, where she held several positions, including vice president of the mergers and acquisitions division in the firm’s healthcare division.

Hartman is a graduate of Wellesley College, with a degree in economics and math.

Life Science Partner places sales and marketing veteran to guide U.S.-based operations and commercialization for innovative medical device firm.

Life Science Partner announces the placement of Patrick A. Maley as president, North America for Itamar Medical, Ltd. In this capacity, Maley assumes overall responsibility for U.S.-based operations. He will establish the company’s commercialization strategy; build a sales and marketing team; lead pharmaceutical, medical and other partnering efforts; and represent the company to financial institutions, the medical community and the media.

Israel-based Itamar has developed a technology, the peripheral arterial tone signal or PAT. Among other applications, PAT improves diagnoses of disorders related to arterial health, such as sleep apnea.

“Patrick has a distinguished, decades-long record of bringing novel products to market for both established medical device companies and start-ups,” says Thomas H. Callaway, Life Science Partner’s founder and president. “And his ability to apply creative marketing and reimbursement strategies has yielded commercial results for innovative technologies.”

From re-thinking product distribution channels to building high-performance sales and marketing divisions to negotiating multi-million-dollar global partnerships, Maley’s efforts have repeatedly contributed to steady revenue growth. Maley comes to Itamar from the chief operating officer position at Biowave, where he led organizational development and go-to-market strategy for an innovative pain therapy product.

As vice president of sales and marketing – business development at Matritech, Maley held worldwide commercialization responsibilities for bladder, cervical, prostate, breast and colon cancer products. For Zoll Medical, as vice president of sales and marketing, Maley managed global marketing and North American sales, with profit-and-loss responsibility for a 110-person team. While at Zoll, he re-positioned product lines, re-organized the sales force according to target market, and better integrated sales, marketing and R&D.

Maley also held vice president titles and led global sales and marketing teams at Boston Scientific’s Mansfield Cardiology Division, medical device start-up company ASI, and Alcon Surgical.

Maley earned both a bachelor’s degree in economics and an MBA from the University of California, Riverside.

Cynthia B. Roberts, a former principal in the Healthcare Practice of Korn/Ferry International, has joined Life Science Partner as vice president.
