Life Science Partner is pleased to announce the recruitment of Mark Phelps, PhD to Canary Medical, where he will serve as Vice President of Technology Development.

Canary Medical is an innovative medical technology company commercializing smart implants in the orthopedic, cardiovascular, and aesthetic markets. The company integrates a sensor and microprocessor system into FDA-cleared implantable medical devices to generate real-time insights about the performance and safety of these products.

Phelps will be driving technology reduction to practice for Canary’s cardiovascular applications, delineating smart implant technologic and business opportunities, providing technical leadership to the Canary Management team, and providing strategic input into building Canary’s infrastructure and business.

Mark Phelps

Previously at Medtronic, Phelps managed the Research and Development team as the Vice President of R&D for Patient Monitoring & Diagnostics. Before that, he was the Senior Program Director for Diagnostics & Monitoring where he worked on a new product line for Medtronic’s wireless implantable cardiac monitor.

Eckerman will lead the unification of this Atlanta-based company’s US and European marketing efforts under a common worldwide strategy as CryoLife continues its transformation from an allographic human tissue provider to a global aortic cardiovascular device leader.

CryoLife is a leader in cryogenically preserved human tissues for cardiovascular applications, as well as heart valves and other medical devices for blood vessel repair.

Megan Eckerman

With a focus on aortic technologies, the company has recently expanded their offerings to heart valves and stent grafts with the acquisition of On-X Life Technologies and JOTEC stent graft systems, respectively.

Ms. Eckerman joins CryoLife from Bolton Medical, an aortic stent graft manufacturer, where she served as Vice President of Global Marketing and was instrumental in the merger of Bolton Medical and Terumo’s subsidiary Vascutek under the brand Terumo Aortic following Bolton’s 2017 acquisition by the Japanese medical equipment company. Her earlier career features progressive sales and marketing roles with Medtronic and Intuitive Surgical, as well as service as Chief of Satellite Launch Operations in the United States Air Force.

Former Senior Director, Global Quality Operations Mylan Pharmaceuticals

Life Science Partner recruited Deva Puranam, MSc, MBA, to serve as Vice President, Global Laboratory Operations at Baxter International to lead the company’s laboratory standardization practices and build out quality systems infrastructure across Baxter’s lab facilities worldwide.

Puranam joins Baxter after serving as Senior Director, Global Quality Operations for Mylan where he was responsible for implementing seamless harmonization for laboratory operational processes overseeing a team of 109 employees spanning across 33 manufacturing sites globally.

“With an enthusiastic communication style that underlies a highly competent individual who can win the respect of others, Puranam will be successful at building the next generation of quality managers at Baxter while improving quality assurance initiatives to exceed regulatory agency inspections worldwide,” states Tom Callaway, MD, Founder and President of Life Science Partner.

Puranam earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and his Master of Science Degree in Organic Chemistry from Andhra University in India in 1991 and 1995. He completed his MBA in Marketing and Management Information Systems (Operations Research Ancillary) from the University of Madras.

Former Director, Global Segmentation Program, GE Healthcare

Life Science Partner recruited Upayan SenGupta, MBA, an innovative senior medical device executive, to become Vice President and General Manager, Health Sciences for Underwriters Laboratories where he will lead The Company’s continued transformation of the Health Sciences business unit from a compliance and audit organization to a proactive participant in the registration and product development teams.

With over 15 years at GE Healthcare, SenGupta was most recently appointed to create and lead the newly formed Segmentation program focused on cutting-edge big data analytics to drive deeper customer centric process and product design.

During his tenure at GE, SenGupta strategically led partnerships across the Sales, Marketing and Supply Chain teams to simplify product offerings and cut costs to improve targeted solutions for customers worldwide. Throughout his career at GE, SenGupta provided innovative cross-functional leadership to The Company’s operations strategy, product development, supply chain planning and commercial operations.

“With a background in “internal consulting” to develop global manufacturing efficiencies and building new quality systems in one of the world’s largest healthcare products companies, SenGupta will be a major asset in his new role at Underwriters Laboratories,” stated Tom Callaway, MD, President and Founder of Life Science Partner.
