Peter Schiller, PhD Joins Canary Medical as Vice President, Research & Development

Life Science Partner Executive Search is pleased to announce the recruitment of Peter Schiller, PhD to Canary Medical, where he will serve as Vice President of Research and Development.

Canary Medical is an innovative medical technology company commercializing smart implants in the orthopedic, cardiovascular, and aesthetic markets.

The company integrates a sensor and microprocessor system into FDA-cleared implantable medical devices to generate real-time insights about the performance and safety of these products.

Peter Schiller, PhD

In his new role, Schiller will spearhead continued product development and commercialization, provide scientific and strategic leadership for this growing team, and serve as the face of the research and development organization to internal and external audiences.

An engineer with a PhD focused on smart sensor systems, Schiller has spent 20 years developing and commercializing novel medical technologies, including a MEMS sensor company he founded and led as CEO.

Schiller previously served as Director of Device Development at San Diego-based Progenity, where he led the design and development of a combination device and connected drug delivery system for gastrointestinal health.

Liz Spurgin Joins the Medical Device Innovation Consortium as Vice President, Health Economics & Patient Value

Life Science Partner is pleased to announce the recruitment of Liz Spurgin to become the first Vice President, Health Economics and Patient Value for the Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC).

The MDIC brings together representatives of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), industry, and non-profits and patient organizations to improve the processes for development, assessment and review of new medical technologies. Spurgin will lead the MDIC’s efforts to increase predictability regarding the scientific and clinical evidence to support health economics assessment and the “reasonable and necessary” standard. She will build on the organization’s earlier successes in advancing regulatory science, but with a focus on patient science and economic value.

Prior to assuming her new role, Spurgin was a senior advisor at the prestigious healthcare advisory firm Leavitt Partners. Here and in her earlier roles, Spurgin has extensive experience working with CMS on health economics and coverage matters. Spurgin holds a Master of Business Administration with a specialization in health care management from the University of Connecticut, as well as a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois. Her deep understanding of the CMS coverage process as well as her thoughtful, results-oriented leadership style will make her a valuable addition to the MDIC leadership team.

Former Director, Global Sales Operations at Terumo BCT

Brigham Briggs has joined Smiths Medical as Vice President, Global Sales Operations – a newly created role for the company where Briggs will have responsibility over the sales organization worldwide. He will oversee the standardization of the sales pipeline, funnel management and incentive compensation across Smiths Medical’s sites around the globe.

Smiths Medical is a global manufacturer of specialty medical devices that provides innovative and lifesaving solutions for the hospital, emergency, home and specialist environments.

Briggs is well-equipped to lead Smiths’ sales operations after directing the worldwide sales operations, sales excellence, and Customer Centric Initiative for Terumo BCT, a medical device equipment manufacturer focused on blood processing technologies. Earlier, Briggs served as Executive Director, Commercial Operations for GreatBatch Medical where he led a global sales team driving business development, customer support, and revenue growth.

Earlier in his sales career Briggs served in sales leadership roles at American Medical System and Boston Scientific. Before joining the medical device industry, Briggs was a Captain for the US Air Force for Aircraft Maintenance and Logistics.

Briggs earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy. He completed his Master of Science Degree in Logistics Management from the Air Force Institute of Technology and is Six Sigma Black Belt Certified.

Bert Slade, MD, Joins Tissue Tech as Vice President, Clinical Development

Former Chief Scientific and Medical Officer Advanced Wound Care, Smith & Nephew

Life Science Partner recruited Bert Slade, MD, to serve as the Vice President, Clinical Development for TissueTech.  Slade has built his career in leading clinical trials, medical affairs, and regulatory approvals for medical device and pharmaceutical companies worldwide.  He joins TissueTech while also providing clinical support for Chisholm Clinical Research Services where he has set up his own vehicle to conduct clinical trials using the European platform as an inroad to EU product approvals.

During his tenure at Smith and Nephew, Slade was challenged as the first CMO for the Advanced Wound Management Division to restructure the three-strategic business unit R&D Departments and two clinical groups into a single international R&D organization with the addition of post-marketing surveillance.

“With his extensive experience in FDA submissions of BLAs and NDAs including a clinical background in wound healing and regenerative medicine, Slade will serve as a critical asset for TissueTech’s clinical trial designs and submissions,” states Tom Callaway, President and Founding Partner of Life Science Partner.

Former Senior Director, Global Quality Operations Mylan Pharmaceuticals

Life Science Partner recruited Deva Puranam, MSc, MBA, to serve as Vice President, Global Laboratory Operations at Baxter International to lead the company’s laboratory standardization practices and build out quality systems infrastructure across Baxter’s lab facilities worldwide.

Puranam joins Baxter after serving as Senior Director, Global Quality Operations for Mylan where he was responsible for implementing seamless harmonization for laboratory operational processes overseeing a team of 109 employees spanning across 33 manufacturing sites globally.

Jing Xie, PhD, MS, Joins MDIC as Vice President, Clinical Affairs

Former Vice President, Global Clinical Affairs, Zimmer Biomet

Life Science Partner recruited Jing Xie, PhD, MS, former Vice President, Global Clinical Affairs for Zimmer Biomet to become the Medical Device Innovation Consortium’s (MDIC) first Vice President, Clinical Affairs.

MDIC is the first-ever public-private partnership (PPP) created with the sole objective of advancing medical device regulatory science to expedite development, assessment, and review of innovative medical technologies. The overall mission of the MDIC is to support the FDA’s vision to achieve first in the world patient access in the US and to assure the safety and effectiveness of medical devices through the Total Product Life Cycle.

Xie takes on her new role at the MDIC after having oversight of approximatively 300 clinical projects worldwide for Zimmer Biomet. She possesses a highly successful track record in the orthopedic industry for delivering on objectives, while maintaining effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

“With a global understanding around clinical trial management including data integration for regulatory agencies across the US, Europe and Asia, Xie is a well-seasoned leader to execute the clinical affairs initiatives at the MDIC,” states Tom Callaway, MD, Founder and President of Life Science Partner.

Scott Cohn Joins Surgical Specialties as Vice President, Global Quality Assurance

Scott Cohn was recruited by Life Science Partner to serve as Surgical Specialties’ Vice President, Global Quality Assurance where he will build a quality systems team and implement the harmonization of Surgical Specialties’ quality operations across its manufacturing facilities worldwide.

Conner Childers, JD, Joins Beckman Coulter as Vice President, Head of Global Compliance

Former Healthcare Compliance Policy Director at Amgen

Life Science Partner partnered with Beckman Coulter to recruit Conner Childers, JD, to serve as Vice President, Head of Global Compliance for Beckman Coulter.  He will report to Curt Brueske, JD, General Counsel.

In his most recent role at Amgen, Childers had direct responsibility for building the compliance program so that the company was prepared to respond to the company’s first Corporate Integrity Agreement.  Working across Amgen’s U.S. operations, Childers recruited and led a team that made compliance part of the corporate commercial objectives.

Joe Jimenez Joins TissueTech as Vice President, Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs

Former Vice President, PGT Quality Teva Pharmaceuticals

Joe Jimenez, Vice President, formerly PGT Quality for Teva Pharmaceuticals has recently become Vice President, Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs for TissueTech, a Miami-based company producing regenerative amniotic tissue-based products for use in the ophthalmology, optometry, musculoskeletal and wound care markets.

Life Science Partner partnered with CEO Amy Tseng and founder Shefferd Tseng, MD, PhD, to recruit Jimenez to prepare the company for the changing regulatory landscape of regenerative medicine products.

At Teva, Jimenez was responsible for leading the global quality team for the PGT joint venture between Proctor & Gamble and Teva where he oversaw an international team based in Switzerland.  “Jimenez has global view of quality,” states Tom Callaway, MD, Founder and President of Life Science Partner.  “He has a broad hands-on approach to developing analytical methods and quality systems combined with a can-do energy that will mesh well with the culture at TissueTech.”

Robert Rajalingam Joins Smiths Medical as VP, Global Product Management, Vascular Access

Former Site Leader and Vice President for Global Marketing at Medtronic/Covidien Vascular Therapies

As a medical device leader and strategic marketing executive, Robert Rajalingam has been selected to lead Smith Medical’s $300 M Vascular Access business.

Life Science Partner collaborated closely with Vice President, Carl Stamp to recruit Rajalingam from Medtronic.

Vascular medicine has been his passion and interest, having worked both in the venous therapy area (spearheading the re-branding with Rethink Varicose Veins campaign including an Olympic spokesperson at Covidien) and in arterial disease at Medtronic Vascular in business development, including a partnership with Abbott Vascular.
