Abiomed to Appoint Seth Bilazarian, M.D., New Vice President of Interventional Cardiology Programs

DANVERS, Mass., Oct. 08, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Abiomed, Inc. (NASDAQ:ABMD), a leading provider of breakthrough heart support technologies, today announced that Seth Bilazarian, M.D. will be appointed as Vice President of Interventional Cardiology Programs, effective October 8, 2015.

Dr. Bilazarian is a clinical and interventional cardiologist and has performed coronary and peripheral interventions at Lahey Clinic, Boston University Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital and was Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) and Chief of the Cardiovascular Steering Committee at Lawrence General. Most recently, he was the Director of Clinical Cardiology Research Program and Clinical Cardiologist at Pentucket Medical Associates, LLC. He also serves on the faculty as an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School, where he has taught since 1995 and is the founder and director of the largest community based cardiac research program in the Partner’s network.

Dr. Bilazarian is board certified in cardiovascular medicine, nuclear cardiology, vascular ultrasound, interventional cardiology, and vascular and endovascular medicine. Dr. Bilazarian is an active participant in outpatient clinical trials in congestive heart failure, hypertension, heart disease prevention, diabetes, anemia, atrial fibrillation, anti-inflammatory strategies for vascular prevention and anticoagulation and anti-platelet therapies. In 2008, he was appointed as physician advisor to the cardiac device panel of the Food & Drug Administration.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Bilazarian is an active blogger in the physician community. His blog, “Practitioner’s Corner with Dr. Seth Bilazarian” was established in 2009 and is hosted on theheart.org and MedScape (http://goo.gl/k5lZqA). He has written over 100 blog posts that cover various topics across the wide spectrum of interventional cardiology.

Dr. Bilazarian received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University and MD from University of Massachusetts Medical School. He completed his internship and residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and cardiology and interventional cardiology fellowship at Boston University Hospital and Boston City Hospital.

Life Science Partner recruited Upayan SenGupta, MBA, an innovative senior medical device executive, to become Vice President and General Manager, Health Sciences for Underwriters Laboratories where he will lead The Company’s continued transformation of the Health Sciences business unit from a compliance and audit organization to a proactive participant in the registration and product development teams.

With over 15 years at GE Healthcare, SenGupta was most recently appointed to create and lead the newly formed Segmentation program focused on cutting-edge big data analytics to drive deeper customer centric process and product design.

During his tenure at GE, SenGupta strategically led partnerships across the Sales, Marketing and Supply Chain teams to simplify product offerings and cut costs to improve targeted solutions for customers worldwide. Throughout his career at GE, SenGupta provided innovative cross-functional leadership to The Company’s operations strategy, product development, supply chain planning and commercial operations.

David Mason, MD, Joins MiMedx as Vice President, Medical Affairs and Clinical Programs

Former Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer For Given Imaging 

Life Science Partner recruited David Mason, MD to become Vice President, Medical Affairs and Clinical Programs at MiMedx Group, a premier global processor and distributer of human amniotic tissue grafts across multiple therapeutic areas.

Mason joins the MiMedx team from his role at Given Imaging following its acquisition by Covidien earlier this year.

In his new role at MiMedx, Mason will lead the clinical direction and oversight of the company’s product development, research and regulatory compliance. “Mason has the ability and talent to add value to the launch process of small molecules and complex biologics across a range of therapeutic areas,” stated Tom Callaway, MD, Founder and President of Life Science Partner. “In this new role, Mason will oversee Mimedx’ relationship with the FDA and the regulation of these important, tissue-derived products.”

Life Science Partner recruited Andre Daniels, MBChB, Executive Director, Pharmacovigilance at Amgen to become Vice President, Head of Medical Safety Physicians at Allergan.

In his new role, Daniels will lead a team of physician executives to support the four key commercial franchises and their pipeline of innovative products.

Originally from South Africa, Daniels earned his MBChB from the University of Cape Town. He earned his diploma in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics as well as his Master in Medical Science (Clinical Epidemiology) from the University of Newcastle, Australia.

Nigel Wilkinson Joins EndoChoice as Vice President, Quality and Regulatory

Former Senior Vice President, Quality and Assurance at Smith & Nephew

Life Science Partner recruited Nigel Wilkinson, a seasoned quality assurance executive to become the Vice President, Quality and Regulatory for EndoChoice.

In his new role, Wilkinson will be responsible for managing a global quality and regulatory organization in the United States, Germany, and Israel. Wilkinson will report to the Chief Executive Officer, Mark Gilreath.

Cully has an extensive background in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, and translational biomarkers. Prior to accepting the position at Cardioxyl, Cully was the Director, Early Development and Discovery Sciences at Merck where she specialized in Cardiovascular Diseases such as hypertension, acute-decompensated heart failure, and hypertension-associated kidney disease.

In her new role at Cardioxyl, Cully will report to the Chief Scientific Officer and lead a team for the first oral HNO program, including indications for post-acute congestive heart failure and chronic heart failure.

Stan Harris Joins MiMedx Group as Vice President, Clinical Operations

Tom Hochuli Joins MiMedx Group as Vice President, Manufacturing

Life Science Partner recruits former Vice President, Biomaterials Manufacturing, of Integra Life Sciences, Inc.

MiMedx Group develops, manufactures and markets regenerative biomaterials and bioimplant processed tissue. With its acquisition of Surgical Biologics, the leading supplier of amniotic tissue, MiMedx has supplied over 90,000 implants to date to distributors and OEMS for application in the Ophthalmic, Orthopedics, Spine, Wound Care and Dental sectors of healthcare.

Two of the Company’s key tissue-derived products are experiencing significant market expansion – AminoFix and EpiFix.  AminoFix provides a solution for in vivo wound covering to reduce scar tissue formation and attachment.

The EpiFix solution provides improved outcomes for patients with full or partial chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, vein circulation ulcers and artery circulation ulcers that fail to heal in a typical conservative care regimen.

Tom Hochuli, a seasoned biomaterials manufacturing and operations executive, has joined the MiMedx Group as Vice President, Manufacturing.  In this role, he will lead a team to process approximately 900 donated tissues per quarter.  Hochuli will be responsible for planning, creating and executing a rapid expansion of the manufacturing facility due to the company’s increasing sales growth.

In his previous role at Integra Life Sciences, Inc., Hochuli was responsible for biomaterials manufacturing within the Global Operations Division.  He led the flagship manufacturing plant through major initiatives to improve quality systems and increase compliance with ISO and FDA regulations.
