Life Science Partner recruits former Vice President, Research and Development of Relievant Medsystems

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Richard (Rick) Pellegrino to become Vice President of Advanced Technology Development for K2M.

Welch Carson has recently acquired K2M, an innovative spinal device company committed to the research, development, and commercialization of solutions for the treatment of spinal pathologies and procedures.

In his new role at K2M, Pellegrino will lead a team of engineers for developing new spinal technologies in-house.  He will also be working with spine surgeons to build customized products for specific needs.

Pellegrino was the inventor of the core technology of Relievant Medsystems, a company that specializes in developing technology targeting the source of chronic low back pain. In this role, Pellegrino was responsible for all facets of research, product design, engineering, and clinical development and recruited a world-class scientific advisory board.

Previously Pellegrino served as Staff Researcher and Development Engineer in three Johnson & Johnson companies; DePuy Spine, Ethicon, and Cordis.

Pellegrino earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts.  He also earned his associates degree in Applied Science and Mechanical Design from Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Wes Porter, a senior compliance executive and attorney, to become Vice President, Deputy Compliance Officer at Allergan Inc. 

Best known for its Botox franchise, Allergan is a technology-driven, multi-specialty health care company that discovers, develops and commercializes innovative pharmaceuticals, biologics and medical devices in the areas of eye care, neurosciences, medical dermatology and urologics.

In Porter’s previous role at CareFusion, a leading global medical technology company headquartered in San Diego, he helped build the de novo compliance organization for the $4 billion revenue spin off from Cardinal Health.  He was most recently responsible for global compliance programs for both the Procedural Solutions and Medical Systems operating segments for the company.  Prior to joining CareFusion, Porter served as the global compliance lawyer for all four Smith & Nephew business units, managing complex internal and external investigations for the company.

Life Science Partner recruits former Vice President, Research and Development, Remote Patient Monitoring at Boston Scientific

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of John Lalonde, an innovative senior medical device executive, to become Vice President, Product Development, Technology and Stimulation Research for Medtronic Neuromodulation. 

Neuromodulation is Medtronic’s second oldest and fourth largest business unit, with products that include neurostimulation systems and implantable drug delivery systems for chronic pain, common movement disorders, and urology and gastrointestinal disorders.

During his tenure at Boston Scientific, Lalonde was responsible for the development of LATITUDE, a cloud-based FDA class III home monitoring system for cardiac patients with wireless medical device implants treating arrhythmias and heart failure.  Previously, LaLonde served as General Manager, Global Engineering, Clinical Systems for GE Healthcare, where he was a global engineering leader of GE’s critical care business unit for neonatal, ICU, and OR patient monitoring and wireless cardiac monitoring systems.

In his new role at Medtronic Diabetes, Lalonde will be serve as the functional leader of Medtronic’s Neuromodulation Business Senior Leadership Team, to drive excellence in product development, technology and stimulation research.

Life Science Partner recruits former Vice President, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Icagen, Inc.

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Mark Suto, PhD, an experienced scientist and drug discovery executive, to the Southern Research Institute in Birmingham, Alabama.

Southern Research Institute.  With a focus on the discovery and advancement of new, small-molecule therapeutics from the design stage to the clinic, Southern Research’s Drug Discovery Research Division has accomplished innovative research in the areas of cancer, infectious disease and neuroscience.

Suto was previously Vice President at Icagen, a biopharmaceutical company focused on the novel small molecule drugs that target ion channels in diverse therapeutic areas. He was responsible for leading discovery and development chemistry activities, including medicinal, bioanalytical and computational chemistry for the company.  Previously, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer at Neurion Pharmaceuticals.

“Suto is a passionate and articulate individual, with an impressive background in drug discovery,” noted Tom Callaway, MD, founder and president of Life Science Partner.  “He will bring infectious enthusiasm along with 28 years of large pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience to the team at Southern Research.”

Life Science Partner recruits former President and Chief Executive Officer of Qteros

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of William  (Bill) Frey, PhD, most recently President and Chief Executive Officer for Qteros, to Georgia Pacific to lead a new business development initiative on disruptive technologies across the company. 

In this role, Frey will be responsible for key areas of investment, such as the use of biotechnology in processing of wood products, materials sciences to create new products, and process engineering to reduce water and energy utilization for a more sustainable business enterprise.

Frey is well qualified to develop this initiative at Georgia Pacific from his leadership at Qteros, a cellulosic ethanol technology company dedicated to accelerating the global commercialization of renewable biofuels.

Previously, Frey served as Global Business Director at DuPont Biofuels where he led global business activities and commercialization of Advanced Biofuels and New Cellulosic Process technologies for the company, resulting in the formation of DuPont Biofuels.   Frey has a significant track record for championing innovation during his 28 years at DuPont, including the creation of new biotechnology-based businesses.

“Frey brings his broad experience and successful insights in identifying and executing transformative opportunities in biofuels and sustainable chemicals and materials to the company,” noted Tom Callaway, President of Life Science Partner.  “His unique blend of developing strategic partners from both sides – large company to small and small company to large – will serve him well in his new role.”

Frey earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA.  He received a PhD in Organic Chemical with an Enzymology and Biochemistry focus from Pennsylvania State University.  He completed his Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard Medical School.

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Scott Treiber, PhD, an experienced clinical research leader, to Hospira to become Vice President of Clinical Operations and Medical Affairs.

Hospira is a $5 B global specialty pharmaceutical and medication delivery company based in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Previously Treiber served as Executive Vice President Clinical Development at inVentiv Clinical Solutions.  He had responsibility for all aspects of clinical monitoring and project management, including executive project oversight and client interaction for full service clinical trials managed by the company.   Earlier Treiber held senior-level positions at leading Contract Research Organizations, including PharmaNet, Quintiles, ICON and Premier Research.

“Treiber has a depth of experience in clinical development organizational management in a wide range of therapeutic categories including neuroscience, cardiovascular, general medicine and oncology,” noted Tom Callaway, MD, President of Life Science Partner.  “His global CRO background will serve the company well as it transforms its business to a more diversified pharmaceutical company including a portfolio of biosimilar drugs.”

Life Science Partner recruits former Director of the Biologics Manufacturing Launch Teams at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Tom Vanden Boom, PhD, a senior biopharmaceutical executive in the development, manufacturing and commercial launch of biologic products.

Hospira is a global specialty pharmaceutical and medication delivery company that develops, manufactures and markets products that help improve the safety, effectiveness and costs of patient care.

In his most recent role at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Vanden Boom was responsible for leading the Biologics Manufacturing Launch Teams for global technical operations manufacturing and supply chain activities supporting the commercial launch of all new biologic products for the company.   Prior to his tenure at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Vanden Boom served as the Department Head of Biological Development at Abbott Laboratories.  In his new role at Hospira, he will provide strategic and technical leadership for the company’s drive to develop biosimilars drugs for some of the world’s blockbuster biological drugs.

Life Science Partner recruits former Lead Director of Clinical Affairs at Boston Scientific Cardiac Rhythm Management Division.

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of clinical affairs executive Steve McQuillan to Medtronic’s Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management Division (CRDM), the largest and oldest business unit of the global $13.5 billion medical device company.

With the recent acquisitions of Ablation Frontiers and CryoCath Technologies, the newly formed CRDM Business Unit, AF Solutions, brings breakthrough therapeutic choices and tools to physicians and their patients with atrial fibrillation.

In his most recent role at Boston Scientific Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) Division, McQuillan was responsible for developing and implementing the CRM and Electrophysiology clinical strategy for all US-based clinical trials.   He had a steady and successful rise through his tenure at the Guidant CRM organization prior joining Boston Scientific.   In his new role, McQuillan will provide strategic leadership, oversight, and overall management of the regulatory and clinical activities for the new atrial fibrillation division.

Life Science Partner recruits biomaterials expert to lead synthetic cartilage product development

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Steve Walsh, PhD, a senior biomaterials technology and development expert, to Carticept Medical to become Vice President, Research and Development for the company. 

Carticept Medical is an Atlanta-based medical device company developing novel therapies designed to address the shortcomings of current conservative and surgical treatment options for patients with osteoarthritis or cartilage injuries.

In his previous role at Cyrolife, another Atlanta-based biotechnology company, Walsh was responsible for leading Biomaterials Technologies and Product Development for the company’s implantable biological devices, surgical adhesives and biomaterials for use in cardiac, vascular, general and reconstructive surgery.

Before his tenure at Cyrolife, Walsh served as Manager of the Implantable Device Development Engineering Group at BioControl Technology in Indiana, PA.   In his new role at Carticept, Walsh will have key responsibility for managing R&D efforts for the company’s synthetic cartilage products and the pipeline portfolio of novel therapeutic solutions.

Co-Founder of Berkley HeartLab to Lead Medical Affairs at Celera

Life Science Partner announces the recruitment of Robert Superko, MD, most recently Executive Director of Genomics and Human Health at St. Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta’s Translational Research Institute, to Celera.

Celera is a healthcare business delivering personalized disease management through a combination of products and services incorporating proprietary discoveries, including a clinical services business, Berkley HeartLab (BHL).  Celera commercializes a wide range of molecular diagnostic products and technologies to provide personalized disease management in cancer and liver diseases.

Dr. Superko is a world leader in the field of metabolic heart disease diagnosis and treatment, and genomics, which is the ability to tailor treatment specifically to a patient based on their genetic makeup.  He has published over 100 manuscripts and 19 textbook chapters and is the author of BEFORE THE HEART ATTACKS, a book written for the lay public explaining advanced aspects of heart disease.

In his role at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dr. Superko continued his research to identify patients’ genetic susceptibility to heart disease, cancer and other chronic disease states. A co-founder of BHL, Dr. Superko will serve as Vice President of Medical Affairs where he will be the key medical spokesperson for the company’s products and services and the key liaison with physician and research collaborators, including academic medical centers, pharmaceutical companies, and the FDA.
